I was watching TV last night and happened to catch a commercial from the local CBS affiliate featuring one of their talking heads. They've been running this ads for a couple months now that feature one or another of their anchors talking about being a talking head, using sincere faces and words like "integrity" and "honesty" and "balanced" and this one was another one of those.
I was sitting in the open door that leads out onto the front-porch and listening more to the coyotes and thunder than the TV, but one particular thing he said caught my attention. I'm only positive on one exact phrase, but the gist of what he said was this
"As a good newsman its my job to protect the viewers from blatant facts, and help them find an appropriate view on the subjects affecting our world today".
Now thats paraphraed, but its pretty close and "blatant facts" is a direct quote.
Am I the only one who is frightened by this?
Since when do we, the viewer, the general populace, need protecting from facts "without any attempt at concealment"? And since when is it the job of journalists to protect us from these dangerous facts?
Unfortunately, pretty much no one is going to take issue with what he said. Most of the viewers will sit there, nod their heads "yup yup" and probably never understand what is wrong with that. Its not neccesarily that they want to be lied to, but it is a comfortable arrangement to never question whats coming through the tube and take it as truth to shape ones world views around. Its comfortable to believe that there is a difference between lying, and finding an "appropriate view", and that no news man would ever lie to us. We dont even have to directly, conciously, think about it and decide to believe it or not believe it - subconciously the mind just finds a comfortable spot and settles in. Well, not my mind... but the mind of most people seeks those paths of least resistance, and will never question the possible value of a "blatant fact". Blatant = bad, right? Blatant lies are bad, so blatant facts must be to. Path of least resistance logic, doesnt even require de-assing the mind from the subconcious couch.

Anyone who believes what they see on the news is either news-worthy or the truth, is a fool.
No news source is objective, no news source is honest. Everyone has agenda's, personal beliefs, and no one is exempt from that - we're all human, and if there is one things human beings are not its objective. This is one reason why I never get my news from just one source, and prefer to broaden my information gathering horizons as much as possible. The greater the difference between your sources, the more truth you will get in news once you've listened to all their reports, and analyzed to find the truthful middle ground between them.
